Figure&Portrait

The basis of artistic excellence

Class format:

workshop in Florence, Via Maggio 21

Duration: from October to June

Start of training: admission all year round

For any level

No age restrictions

- English-speaking

- Russian-speaking

What you will learn on the course:

- Painting. The main objective is the methodology of the process. To lay out the process of the work, to gain an understanding of the stages of execution, to explore different colour combinations through a series of references selected from among the best academic works or from paintings by artists of the past. The actual pictorial tasks are solved through the observation of fine art and in the search for colour harmonies.

- Drawing. We aim to master the stages of drawing, to learn how to set performance tasks at each stage, and to be able to analyze complex forms by reducing them to simple ones. At the same time we should not forget about drawing aesthetics, which is also discussed on the course.

- Anatomy.  Analysis, reference books and anatomical sketches are the foundation of this program. But! We use unconventional methods in both teaching and  the academic structure of the course. The plastic solution of the human body, the peculiarities of its shape and structure are learned in a relaxed and easy form of study much better than the dry, scholarly methods typically used to teach the subject.

- Composition. The ability to set and solve artistic problems independently is what distinguishes a professional artist from someone who simply knows how to handle a pencil and paint.  It is a creative exploration of how the elements of composition work, how an artist can manipulate the pictorial media - line, spot, colour and texture, and how an artistic image is formed.

What awaits you on the course:

- International teaching staff with both classical academic and contemporary artistic backgrounds.

- Both individual and group sessions await you, where students discuss their work, ideas and receive constructive feedback.

- Critical reviews and presentations.

- Recommended reading: books and websites available to learners from which they can choose which are most developmentally appropriate.

- Independent learning and homework: outside of the classroom, you will develop your skills.

- Module feedback: in addition to the feedback you receive throughout each module of study, at the end of each module you will participate in a review of your work, which helps you move to the next level of mastery.

- Filling your portfolio with work of the highest calibre.

- Compositional work on sketches of paintings with detailed plastic analyses from experienced teachers.
